We are in cultures that propagate the theme, it is all about you!”. Follow your passion, be all that you can be, dance to the beat of your own drum as you find yourself. We are taught that if you believe it and you can perceive it, you can achieve it. All you need is believe what you want, and you will become what you want. This is the zenith of expressive individualism which is one of the greatest enemies of transformation in our societies. With too much focus on self we lose the meaning and understanding of why God created us and what our divine purpose is.
Think about the different sectors of society. People nowadays “shop” for churches like they would shop for a car. They investigate the specs, check out the interior, the features, the “power” to make sure it meets THEIR needs before they sign on the dotted line. We make the church about us and when it doesn’t meet our needs, we move on to the next one.
When it comes to business, we are in it only for as long as it profits you. Let’s not even start talking about Politics, or is it the “dirty game”? Family; it is unfortunate to see parents set up their children for failure in the future, as a result of lack of intentional parenting. Environment; this is becoming a crisis in Africa. People litter everywhere which a lack of concern. Life has become one big buffet; we only pick what interests our eyes and our fulfilment. Selfishness is becoming the greatest enemy to transforming our society. We need to begin living beyond ourselves. We need an attitude change that will propel us to see beyond our limitations, our horizons, ourselves and start living for the transformation of our societies.
It is against this backdrop that I present the theme for this year’s Fearless Summit as, “BEYOND – …it’s not about you…”.
8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
The purpose of God’s creation was not merely to have his people exist, rather, His new creation is to be active and productive like Him. Our salvation doesn’t come from works but by grace, however, it is for works. The Apostle Paul qualifies that and says, not just “works”, but “good works”. Good works that come as a result of living in obedience. God designed how His followers should live. We need to Fearlessly influence our sectors of society because God has deposited in us what we need for that. We are blessed to be a blessing.
